Youth Bible Study

That's right, youth Bible study is starting up again and tonight is the night. Jesslyn has very graciously offered to host us for this, so we'll be meeting at her house (1515 5th Street) at 7:00 pm.

In case you're wondering what youth Bible study is all about...it's a time for us to come together, share things that are going on in our lives, study the Bible or a Christian book or discuss various topics in order to figure out who God is and what it means for us to follow him.

Because tonight is the first Bible study of the new year, we'll take some time to talk about what we're hoping to get out of Bible study, where we're at in our lives & relationship with God, and hopefully figure out what would be most beneficial for us to start our new year of youth Bible study.

Youth Worship Night

A new year of youth is about to begin and I'm not going to lie, I've got a good feeling about this year. We're going to be meeting tonight at Scott St. at 7:00 pm. We'll be in the gym tonight and we're going to be doing something new...having a worship night. So, we'll be worshiping God tonight through singing and sharing and being together.

End of the Summer :(

Can you believe that the summer is coming to end and September is already here!?! Well, tomorrow night we're going to end the summer with a bang. We'll be having an end of the summer/long weekend bbq at Kevin's parents' house. We'll MEET AT THEIR HOUSE (3 Glencairn Dr.) NOT AT THE CHURCH at 7:00 pm. Be hungry because the grill be going and the food will be delicious. Please bring $3 to help cover the cost of the food. We're going to be outside all evening, so dress appropriately and there is a pool there, so if you want to go swimming then bring your swimsuit and towel (girls remember to bring a dark tank top for over your bikini).

Ice Cream @ Port

For youth tomorrow, we'll be going to Port Dalhousie where you can get ice cream, ride the carousal, throw a frisbee around on the beach, walk the pier...really the options are endless. Just make sure you bring some money along if you want ice cream and bring a sweater (it is definitely getting colder out once the sun goes down) and bug spray (remember the bug fiasco of 2 summers ago...ugh).

As of right now, I have not been able to find a house for after youth, so if you guys want to go somewhere after youth then someone needs to ask their parents and give me a call either today or by the latest tomorrow morning. Otherwise, it'll be Port and then home. It will be a smaller group since a bunch of people are at Camp this week, so if you're worried about size then this would be a great week for you to have the group over. Outdoor Movie Night

Tomorrow night is outdoor movie night. We'll be meeting at the church at 7:00pm and then heading to Gary's house (327 Line 4, N.O.T.L.) for an evening of outdoor hanging out and movie watching. The feature movie is always a surprise so don't even try getting it out of me, but it's a classic that I'm sure we'll all enjoy.

Please, please, please, bring warm clothes and blankets along because we can't start the movie until it's dark outside and with the darkness comes cold. Also bring a lawn chair if you've got one and bug spray.

Also, if you have not yet reminded your parents about the parents and leaders meeting tonight at 7:30 pm at Fairview then please do so.

Parents and Adult Leaders Meeting

Can you make sure that your parents know about our parents and adult leaders meeting this Thursday at 7:30 pm in the youth room at Fairview? This meeting is not mandatory (obviously), but it's a chance for us to get to know your parents, let them know what our youth program is all about, answer any questions, and tell them how great all of you are.

The information for this meeting has been in both churches bulletins and two weeks ago I gave you guys handouts to pass on to your parents so hopefully they already know about this meeting, but can you tell them about it just in case? Thanks.

Pool Party

For youth tonight we're going to be having a pool party at Kevin's parents' house.

Meet at the church at 7:00 pm and if you want to go swimming then bring your swimsuit and towel (girls remember to bring a dark tank top to wear over bikinis). Be prepared to be outside for the evening.

Ridicuputt

This Friday is going to be amazing and ridiculous because we are doing ridicuputt. If you don't know what that means then you'll just have to come out to find out.

Please bring $7 for the putting portion of the night and $3 for the ridiculous portion of the night...preferably separately because we will need the money at different times, but don't worry about it if you can only bring a $10 bill rather than the proper change.

Be at the church at 7:00 pm and be prepared to be outside for the night...bug spray, sweater, etc.

Frolf

I can't believe that tomorrow is already Friday!!! Well, here are the details for youth tomorrow... We'll meet at Scott St. MB Church at 7:00 pm and then we'll be going to Mark's parents' house for some rousing rounds of frolf, to be followed by a sweet bonfire and some smores. Be at the church on time or if you know you'll be late then meet us out there (1313 President Court). Be prepared to be outside for the night...bring a sweater, bug spray, etc. Also, if you've got a good frisbee at home then please bring that along as well.

VBS Painting

This is just a reminder that we're going to be doing some painting and set-up tonight for VBS. We'll meet at GRANTHAM Church at 7:00 pm (469 Grantham Ave). Obviously since we're going to be painting, wear clothing that you don't mind getting paint on.

VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE!!!

I've been looking at the forecast for Port Burwell (where the Sand Hills are) and it's calling for thunderstorms tonight and tomorrow. Anyone who was on the retreat two summers ago will remember how miserable it was to camp in the rain...and I'm guessing that thunderstorms will be even worse...SO, instead of going to the Sand Hills we're going to stay local and sleep at my parents' house, have our sessions, do some awesome local day trip things tomorrow (if its clear out), and stay nice and dry all weekend.

We'll meet at the church at 7:00pm instead of 5:00pm because we are no longer going to be driving for 2.5 hours. You still need to bring your sleeping bag, pillow, swimsuit & towel (hopefully we'll be doing some awesome wet activities tomorrow), Bible, bug spray, etc.

Let me know if you have any questions. And for those of you who opted out of coming on the retreat because of work or for other reasons let me know if you want to join us now and I'll see what we can do.

Youth Retreat!!!

Here's the deal for the youth retreat tomorrow:

We're meeting at the church at 5:00pm...please be on time! We will be stopping for supper on the way, so you can either eat before you come to the church, bring some money along for supper, or bring a bag supper along.

Things to remember to pack are: a sleeping bag (or blanket), pillow, swimsuit (girls make sure to bring either a one piece or tankini or a dark tank top to wear over bikinis), towel, toiletries, Bible, sunscreen, bug spray, clothing, mess kit (plate, cup, cutlery).

Oh, and we'll be doing midnight meat tomorrow night, so if you want to partake in that then bring a piece of meat for Gary to grill for you. Other than that all the food will be provided.

Picnic Tonight

It was in the bulletin and I announced it on Friday, but here are the details for the picnic tonight...sorry for not sending this sooner...I blame it on my lack of internet access.

We'll meet at 7:00 pm AT Russell Ave. Park (I'll give you the address and directions at the end of the message). We'll be eating supper together, so do not eat before you come. You don't have to bring any food or anything, but maybe bring a couple of dollars to help cover the cost of the food ($2). After we eat, we'll hang out...maybe throw a frisbee around, play in the splash pad, etc. Oh, one thing you could bring would be a blanket to put on the ground to sit on.

Retreat and Friday

Mission 360 is over and I'm not going to lie, it was AMAZING!!! And I'm not just saying that...ask Mark, Willow or Kristen. Hopefully we'll have a chance to share a bit about it with you guys.

Anyhow, it's come to my attention that not a lot of you have been at youth for the past two weeks, so I want to make sure that all of you know that the summer retreat is coming up really soon...next weekend (July 23-25). This Friday is the deadline to hand in your forms, but since some of you haven't been out to youth in the past two weeks, you probably don't have a form yet. Please let me know if you need a form because I really need to know who is coming by Friday so I can buy the appropriate amount of food and make sure we have enough vehicles to get there and tents to sleep in, etc.

If you don't have a form yet, then please respond to this message immediately to let me know and I can get you a form.

Also, we're going to be playing Capture the Flag this Friday since we were rained out last Friday, but in order for it to be fun you all need to come out...seriously, we can't play Capture the Flag with only 8 students!!! So come out this Friday at 7:00 pm...it'll be awesome!

Change of Plans

I'm not sure if you've looked outside today, but the weather is not nice :( ...so, instead of Capture the Flag you're amazing adult leaders have come up with a rain plan...you will be having a movie night.

Capture the Flag

Hello SSMAIRVIEW!!!

I trust and hope that you're all doing well. Mark, Willow, Kristen and I are having a blast on Mission 360 and learning loads about God, our city, and ourselves. It's been pretty exhausting, but incredible. I can't wait to share about the trip when we get back.

Anyhow, just so you know, you'll be playing Capture the Flag for youth this Friday, so be at the church at 7:00 pm and be ready to run around...wear proper shoes and possibly bring a sweater and bug spray because you'll be outside all night.

Also, I think you might be going out for ice cream afterward, so if you want ice cream then bring some money along ($5 should cover a cone).

Hiking & FIREWORKS!!!

For youth this Friday we're going to be going hiking, so make sure that you wear appropriate footwear and clothing...also bring some bug spray and perhaps a water bottle. It's not going to be an intense hike or anything, so don't worry if you're not super outdoorsy...it'll be enjoyable for all. Meet at the church at 7:00 and don't be late or you might miss the ride.

And then because this weekend is Canada Day weekend and if there's one thing you think of when you think of SSMAIRVIEW it's patriotism, we're going to celebrate with our own SSMAIRVIEW fireworks show. Now, to make this happen...or perhaps I should say, to make it good, we all need to chip in, so bring some money along to contribute to the fun. There is no set amount that each person has to bring, but just know that the more money we have, the better the show will be. I suggest that everyone bring between $5-$10 along...but that's just a suggestion. We'll be doing this at Gary's house, so if you'll need to be picked up somewhere then get your parents to pick you up there (327 Line 4, N.O.T.L.).

Also, Willow, Kristen, Mark and I will be starting Mission 360 this Friday, so think of us and pray for us this coming week.

Ultimate Frisbee

School is OVER!!!! Hopefully all of you now feel the freedom of summer seeping into your bodies and minds.

Tomorrow night for youth we're going to be playing ultimate frisbee, so bring proper running shoes, wear clothes that you can sweat in, and bring a water bottle...you might also want to bring clothes to change in to afterward.

We'll meet at Scott St. at 7 and then head to the park. Please be on time so you don't miss us.

No Bible Study

Guys Campout & Girls Hangout

BOYS CAMP OUT
You guys are camping out with with Scott St.'s boys club. You'll be meeting at the church at 5:45 pm and then heading over to Jeff Wiens' house where you'll be hanging out, doing guy stuff, eating meat, being manly, etc.

Please bring a tent if you've got one, a sleeping bag & pillow, your swimsuit & a towel, a baseball glove if you've got one, and some meat to grill for midnight meat.

It is a camp out...that means over night, so hopefully you've already told your parents about that. You can plan on being home some time tomorrow morning.

GIRLS HANGOUT
Lady's, we'll be going to my parents' house tonight to hang out, go swimming, talk, eat good food, watch a movie, etc. We'll be meeting at the church at 7:00 pm and then heading over there.

We'll probably hang out outside for a bit, so please dress appropriately for the weather. Bring your bathing suit if you want to go swimming, and be ready for a fun night. We will not be sleeping over, so we'll be finished at the usual youth ending time (between 11 and midnight).

Last Bible Study

School Yard Games

Tomorrow night is youth!!! Wow, this week has gone by quickly! Anyhow, we're going to go back to simpler times that involved skipping, hopscotch, and holding hands at recess...that's right we'll be playing school yard games...although I don't want to see any hand holding tomorrow night...unless it's during a game of Red Rover.

We'll be meeting at the church at 7:00 pm and then heading across the street to Lincoln Centennial, so if you're late then just meet us there. Please wear shoes you can run in and dress weather appropriate.

Bible Study & Blue Jays

Just a reminder that we've got youth Bible study tonight at 7:00 pm at my house.

Also, Fairview Church has invited us to join them for a Jays game on Saturday, July 10th. They are playing the Boston Red Sox. Tickets are $12 per person for level 500 seats. Please let me know if you're intersted in going.

Canal & Ice Cream

This Friday we're going to be getting outside and getting active. We're going to the Welland Canal for a walk after which we will go the Avondale for some ice cream...hm, that might defeat the purpose of being active... It'll be nice and laid back and a great time to hang out and have fun.

We will be meeting at the church at 7:00 pm. Make sure you dress appropriately for the weather. And bring $ along if you want to get some ice cream.

Bible Study & Mission Trip Info

I'm back now, so that means that youth Bible study will be tonight at 7:00 pm at my house. Hopefully I'll see a lot of there.

I also wanted to give you the details for our summer mission trip again. We're going to be doing "Mission 360" with two other churches from here in the Niagara Region (Southridge and Cornerstone).

Mission 360 is a week long mission trip experience hosted right here in the Niagara Region. It might not seem as exciting as going away for a mission trip, but it'll give us a chance to learn what it looks like to really answer God's call to action right here in our city. We’ll be doing a wide variety of things such as light construction work, serving the elderly, developmentally disabled, homeless, and also aiding with local community outreach programs...all the usual mission trip stuff. I'm really excited about this opportunity because I'm sick of us just talking about what it means to live out our faith in our daily lives and I think this will help us figure out how to actually do it.

The dates for the trip are July 2-10 and it'll cost $270. The money goes to paying for food & accommodation, transportation expenses, covering the cost of our fun activities, etc. This is not a lot of money for a mission trip, but if your concerned about the cost then let me know and we can talk about some fundraising ideas.

Because the trip is only a month away, I NEED TO KNOW WHO IS INTERESTED IMMEDIATELY. Let me know if you've got any questions.

Here's the important details of the week:

1. Bible study will be at the church this Tuesday at 7:00 pm and Mark will be leading it...It'll be awesome!!! Bible study is for EVERYONE!!!

2. On Friday we'll be playing giant games. It will also be awesome. Make sure you wear running shoes. Be at the church at 7:00 pm. Remember that there is a wedding happening that night, so try to be quiet when you're entering the church.

First off, I want to remind everyone that we're volunteering at the Benefit Shop tonight from 6-8 pm. Meet me there at 6 (it's at the corner of Grantham and Facer...let me know if you need directions).

Secondly, here's the deal for youth tomorrow night. We'll be going to my parents' house for the evening. The swimming pool (indoor) will be open, so if you want to go swimming then bring your bathing suit & towel (girls remember to bring a tank top to wear over your bikini...or wear a one-piece or tankini). It's supposed to be really nice outside so we'll plan on being outside for the evening...dress appropriately for the weather.

We're meeting at the church at 7:00 pm and we'll be leaving shortly after that so be on time, or meet us at my parent's house (1178 Concession 6, N.O.T.L.)

Stuff for this Week

Just a reminder that we've got youth Bible study tonight at my house (169 Lake St.) at 7:00 pm.

Group Game and Church Retreat

I'm not going to lie, I'm not very competitive, but a little competition never hurt anyone, eh. Tomorrow night we're going to battle it out to see who the top SSMAIRVIEW members are. You'll us your wit, your creativity, and more.

Make a Movie Night

Lights! Camera! Action! Tomorrow is “Make-a-Movie Night” so that means that you’ll have a chance to put all your acting, directing, screen writing, etc. skills into action. I’m not going to lie, I’m not very creative and therefore this has never been one of my favourite events, but because of that, Carmen and I have planned it in a way that even I can have fun with it.

We’ll be meeting at Scott St. at 7:00 pm, so I’ll see you then.

I’m going to be trying to get a hold of people tonight to see who’s got video cameras we can use, but if you’ve got one at home that your parents will let us use then please respond to this message and let me know…that’ll cut down on the phone calls I have to make tonight. We need video cameras and the cables that go with them, so we can plug them into a television.

Volunteering Tonight

This is just a reminder that we're volunteering at the MCC Christian Benefit Shop tonight. We'll be meeting at the church at 6:00 pm and please be on time. I want to leave right away so we can maximize our volunteer time.

I'm not entirely sure what we'll be doing there, but we might be sorting and pricing clothing, folding and pricing fabric, fixing and getting appliances and furniture ready to be sold, etc. It could really be anything. There is a chance that you will get dirty, so please don't wear your favourite clothes.

The store closes at 8:00 pm, so we will leave shortly after that.

Volunteering on Thursday & Sign-up for Sunday

This is just a reminder that for Bible study this week we're volunteering at the Christian Benefit Shop, so we will not be meeting at my house tonight, but we'll be meeting at Scott St. Church at 6:00 pm on Thursday.

Also, the Spaghetti Dinner & Pie Auction sign up sheets didn't make it all the way around the room on Friday, so please respond to this message to let me know if you can bake a pie and/or help with set up, serving, and clean up on Sunday.

Youth Tomorrow and More

Tomorrow night will be a night filled with adventure and mystery and you seriously do not want to miss it…I don’t want to give anything away, so that’s all I’m going to say about that, but trust me it’s going to be good and even if you think you know what a murder mystery is all about, know that there will be twists and turns all over the place with this one.

We’ll be meeting at the church at 7:00 pm tomorrow night, so I’ll see you then!

Also, our annual Spaghetti Dinner & Pie Auction is coming up on Sunday, April 25th…that’s next Sunday. All former SSMBY members will know what this is, but since we’re now SSMAIRVIEW I’ll explain it. It’s basically our main fundraiser for the year and it fills up our youth budget and provides us with the funds we need to run a great youth program.

As a group we put on this Spaghetti Dinner for the church and then for dessert we auction off pies that WE HAVE BAKED. Our church loves us and regardless of how good our pies are, some of them go for over $100! It’s a lot of work, but it’s loads of fun, and it’s great to see the support that the church has for us.

Anyhow, in order to make this work, I need everyone’s help! I need people to help set the tables, people to serve, people to clean up, people to help with the cooking, and especially people to bake pies. We need at least 20 pies. Now, you might be thinking, “I’ve never baked a pie before, so she couldn’t possibly be talking to me.” I am talking to you! Ask your mom if she can help you or call your grandmother…I’m sure she’d love to spend time with you. I don’t know how to bake a pie either, so I’ll be getting together with my mom to get my baking on.

I’m going to be sending around a sign-up list tomorrow to see who can help with what. Even if you don’t attend church at Scott St. on Sunday mornings, this is one Sunday that I’m requesting that you ask your parents if you can come to Scott St. for.

This message is getting crazy long, so that’s all I’ll say about this for now, but I’ll explain a bit more at youth tomorrow.

NO BIBLE STUDY TONIGHT

I hate to do this again, but I'm canceling youth Bible study tonight. I hurt my back again and don't think I'll be up for having all of you over for it tonight. Sorry about that and if you know of someone who was planning on coming, can you let them know that we won't be meeting tonight? Thanks.

Post-Easter Easter Stuff

Although Easter has already passed, we would not be SSMAIRVIEW if we didn't drag it out it a bit (remember our SSMAIRVIEW Christmas potluck...), so tonight will be all things Easter. In my last message I had mentioned a horrible Christian t-shirt competition, but we're going to hold off on that for a bit to give people more time to get one, so keep your eyes open, because the competition isn't happening tonight, it will be happening in the near future.

Bible Study and more

Hello SSMAIRVIEW!

I just want to remind you that we've got Bible study at my house tonight at 7:00 pm. Remember Bible study is for EVERYONE.

Also, this Friday we're going to be doing post-Easter Easter stuff...what the heck does that mean?!? Well, I'm not going to give it all away, but it will include a horrible Christian T-shirt competition, so either dig out your horrible Christian t-shirt, or try to find one from the thrift store, or get creative and make one...here are some examples of what a horrible Christian t-shirt might say: JCU (Jesus Christ Univeristy in the style of a university t-shirt), iPray, anything that takes a regular logo and replaces words to make it "Christian".

So, start working on finding a horrible Christian t-shirt and stay tuned for more info about this Friday.

Easter Weekend

Easter weekend is a busy weekend at church, so here are the important things for all SSMAIRVIEW members to remember.

1. There is no youth on Friday night. Enjoy some time with your family.

2. There are Good Friday services for you to attend...Fairview at 10:30 am and Scott St. at 10:45 am.

3. We've got our annual Sunrise Service at 6:45 am on Sunday morning. Meeting us at Lock 1. Let me know if you don't know how to get there and be on time because we're going to be STARTING at 6:45. Dress warm, bring blankets and a lawn chair. We will also be going out for breakfast at Angel's Diner after the Sunrise Service, so bring some money along for that.

4. The Sunday school program at Scott St. is looking for some people to hide the candy bags for the kids. Be at Scott St. at 9:30 am to help with that.

5. Think about the significance of Easter and what it is that we are remembering and celebrating.

Bible Study Tonight - READ THIS

We're going to be meeting at the church tonight instead of at my house, because Scott St.'s ministry team (the pastoral staff and a few other leaders in the church) would like to meet with us...don't worry, we're not in trouble or anything, they just want to meet with us to chat about church and stuff.

Please come out tonight and represent the youth. Seriously, as a youth group we are part of the church and I don't think we should take it for granted that the church is trying to give us a voice. Whether you attend Scott St. on Sunday mornings or not, if you are a part of SSMAIRVIEW then you are invited to come to this meeting.

Bowling

I can't believe that tomorrow is already Friday! For youth tomorrow night we're going bowling. It costs $4 per person, so make sure you bring money along and if possible please bring exact change. We'll be meeting at the church at 7:00 and make sure you come on time because you don't want to miss the ride to the bowling alley.

March Break Movie Marathon

That's right, tomorrow we're going to be having our first ever SSMAIRVIEW movie marathon. The feature trilogy for the night will be Back to the Future starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd. I just found out on Tuesday that not all of you have seen the Back to the Future movies...shocking, I know...well, if that's you then you're in for a treat.

The first movie will be starting at 5:00 pm, but the fun will be lasting all night, so if you can't make it for 5 then come when you can.

I'll be ordering some pizza for supper after the first movie, so bring $2 along to help cover the cost.

Youth Breakfast

No school for a week, eh.

This is just a reminder that whoever wants to can join me for breakfast on Tuesday. We'll be meeting at the church at 10:00 am and then heading over to Angel's Diner. They've got a breakfast special (2 eggs, bacon or sausage, hashbrowns, toast) for really cheap...I forget the actual price, but it's definitely under $5.

I know that a lot of you probably want to sleep as late as possible all week and that's fine if you do, but sometimes its fun to do something different...and who doesn't love going out for breakfast?

Gargon

Wow, this is late. Luckily the essential details to know for tonight are the same as the majority of youth nights...We're meeting at Scott St. MB Church at 7:00 pm.

What will we be doing at Scott St. MB Church at 7:00 pm? Playing GARGON!!! It's going to be awesome.

Make sure you wear proper footwear...as in running shoes with good traction. There will be a lot of running around tonight and I don't want anyone slipping and hurting themselves because they were wearing flimsy shoes!

I have to pre-pay the tickets so make sure that you bring your money along because I need that money back. It's $12 for students (I'm still trying to find out if that's for university students as well) and $15 for adults.

Laura Secord Play

This Friday we're going to see the play at Laura Secord. It's called "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" and it's hilarious...and three of our own youth members are in it (Matt and John are actors in it and David is in the orchestra)!

Tickets cost $12 for students and $15 for non-students and I need to pre-order the tickets, so I need to have exact numbers of who is going, so I need you to reply to this message as soon as you get it if you want to come.

Change of plans

Okay, here's the deal. Our bus has been canceled for tonight, but don't panic, I've come up with an alternate plan. The bus is clear to take us up tomorrow morning, so, pay attention to this, we will be meeting at the church tonight at our regular time, 7:00 pm. Bring all of your retreat stuff along when you come. We're going to have our first session here at the church tonight and then we're going to have a sleepover AT THE CHURCH!!! I'm still working on finding a place for us to watch Canada play in the semi-finals tonight, but if that's your concern then don't worry, I'll figure something out. Anyhow, so we'll sleepover at the church and then leave for camp bright and early tomorrow morning and enjoy the rest of our weekend up there.

The important things to remember:

Winter Retreat!!!!

This weekend is the youth retreat!!!!!! Can you tell that I'm excited about it? Here's what you need to know:

1. We're meeting at the church at 4:45pm on Friday and YOU'VE GOT TO BE ON TIME. Seriously, we need to load up the bus and head out so be at the church at 4:45.

2. It's going to be awesome!

3. Remember to pack: winter clothes, sleeping bag & pillow, your Bible & a pen.

MB Youth Conference

This is just a reminder that we're going to Toronto for the MB Youth Conference tomorrow. If you didn't sign up for it last week and you still want to come then give me a call and let me know. It's going to be really good and we still have a few seats available, but you HAVE TO LET ME KNOW. Those of us going to the conference are meeting at Scott St. at 5:15.

For those of you who are not coming to the conference, there will be no youth for you (obviously, since the youth event is going to the conference). DO NOT COME TO THE CHURCH AT 7:00!!!

Pancake Tuesday

This is just a reminder that we're not having regular youth Bible study tonight because we'll be busy eating pancakes at Scott St. Do not come to my house tonight, BUT you're all invited to come to Scott St. Church at 6:30 for a pancake supper. This is an annual thing we do at Scott St. and people from the community are invited, so don't think you'll feel out of place if you don't attend Scott St...everyone is invited!

Dinner of Love

Love is in the air and at youth we like to maximize on all the potential awkwardness of that, so tonight we're adding a twist to our annual "Cooking with Mark" night. Mark will first teach us how to make a romantic dinner (or "Dinner of Love" if you will) and then we will be partaking in it. You'll have to come out tonight to find out what the twist is.

Now, because the group has grown significantly in the past month, there will be enough food for everyone to have some, but I don't think there will be enough food for everyone to have a full meal, so eat a small dinner at home before you come.

We'll be meeting at Scott St. at 7:00 pm and trust me, you do not want to miss this!

Last week Gary made the announcement about the Ontario Youth Conference in Toronto next Friday. It'll cost $5. There will be a speaker and we'll be doing something called a street orientation...I'll explain it tonight. I will have a sign up list tonight and I NEED TO KNOW WHO IS COMING, so ask your parents and be ready to let me know tonight. I don't actually need the money until next week, but I do need to know who is coming tonight.

Also, if you haven't given me your retreat form and money then make sure you bring it.

NO BIBLE STUDY TONIGHT

This is just a reminder that there is no youth Bible study tonight, so DO NOT come to my house tonight. Instead, we're going to be volunteering at the MCC Christian Benefit Shop on Thursday, so meet me at Scott St. Church at 5:30 on Thursday.

We'll be sorting and pricing toys and clothes...in their words, all the people who work there are old and have no idea what is cool anymore...I thought that was funny. Anyhow, I think it'll be fun and we'll be doing good at the same time (all the money they make goes to help underdeveloped countries) so it's win/win.

Swimming & Stuff

There are two important points in this message:

1. We are going swimming at my parents' house tomorrow night for youth so bring your bathing suit and towel if you want to go swimming (girls, if you've got a bikini then please bring a dark tank top to wear over top of it). Don't worry if you don't want to go swimming, it's a great house to hang out at, so there will be plenty of other stuff to do. Be at the church on time (7:00 pm) because it would suck if you came late and missed the ride out. That being said, let me know if you know you'll be late (or if your parents will be picking you up early) and I can give you directions to my parents' house.

2. Tomorrow is the deadline for the retreat forms and money so REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR FORM & MONEY!!! Let me know if for some reason you can't bring it tomorrow and I'll think about making an exception for you.

Youth Bible Study

Creative Photo Night

Now that exams are over and your brains have had some time to recuperate we're going to get creative. We'll be meeting at Scott St. at 7:00 pm tomorrow night for a photo night. If you've got a camera then please bring it (and the cables for it) along and get ready to tap into your creative side...some of us might have to "tap" a bit deeper than others, but it's sure to be fun!

If you know you'll be attending the winter retreat then feel free to bring your form and $ along...next week is the deadline for it, but early is always good!

Lounge Night

Today was the first day of exams and I hope that all of you are feeling alright. Since tomorrow night is, BAM, right in the middle of exams, we're going to do our bi-annual lounge night. It'll be a night of games, relaxing and most importantly, NO THINKING!

Bible Study

Man, it feels like it's been forever (say that again Sandlot style...forever) since we've had regular Bible study, but tonight is the night! Meet me at 7:00 pm at my house (169 Lake St.). We're going through the gospel of Luke right now and if you've got a chance then I suggest reading through the first 4 chapters of Luke before coming as a refresher of what we've talked about so far. Fairview students are invited to come as well, so if that's you then know that we'd love it if you came.

Okay, so there have already been two messages about Friday, but this one isn't actually from me. It's from Nikki and Rachel and they're the ones actually organizing it. Make sure you read it because there is some new info.

So this Friday night is our cheesy Christmas potluck. We will be meeting at Scott St., down stairs in the fire side room at 6:30pm.

We will be having our potluck, so make sure to bring something. Bean sent you all a list of suggestions already so that should give you some idea of what to bring.

Also it is a CHEESY Christmas party, and what is a cheesy Christmas party without a tacky Christmas sweater? So go out to value village or any thrift or your grandma's closet and find the most tacky Christmas sweater you can. There will be a prize for the person who has the best (or rather worst?) sweater.

We are also going to do a tacky re-gift exchange. So if you or someone in your family got something for Christmas that you really have no use for wrap it up and bring it. Or find something from your house you don't want anymore and wrap it up!

Those are just a few of the things planned for Friday night, so make sure you are there. Its gonna be fun! And after wards we might be watching a Christmas movie.

This Week

I wrote last week that we’d be having regular youth Bible study at my house tonight, but I lied. We’re actually going to be joining the church (Scott St.) for the last night of the New Year’s prayer meetings. I’ve been out to the last two and it’s a small group of people from the church that’s been attending them, but it’s been great to think about what God is calling us to as a church and then pray for different aspects of that, so tonight we can do that regarding youth. Why not start the new year out in prayer?

Tonight’s prayer meeting will be at Scott St. at 7:30. If you’re planning on coming then make sure you are on time because it will start at 7:30 (perhaps plan on coming 5 minutes early). It’ll probably be over by 8:30, so if you guys want to, we can go to Tim Hortons afterward. And text all your youth friend to make sure they know that we’ll be at the church, not at my house.

This Friday, as you will of course remember from last weeks message, is our Ugly Christmas Sweater Potluck. The holidays are finally over and you might be sick of Christmas already, but in youth we like to beat a dead horse (is that really a saying? Ugh.) and keep the festivities going.

We’ll be meeting at Scott St. at 6:30 and everyone has to bring their favourite dish to share with the group. In case you’re having a hard time coming up with something, here is a list of suggestions:
• Veggie platter
• Fruit platter
• Meatballs
• Pasta or potato salad
• Some sort of casserole
• Stew
• Chili
• Perogies
• Soup
• Crackers & dip or cheese
• Garlic bread
• Dinner rolls
• Salad of any kind
• Dessert
• Anything that you like to eat
Now, in order to keep your parents from stressing out about this either plan on making your dish yourself or tell them about this A.S.A.P.!!!

If it’s still snowy out on Friday then perhaps we can go tobogganing after youth is finished. I’ll make sure to message you guys again if that’s the plan so that you can bring your winter gear and whatnot.

Happy Holidays

Wow, it feels like a while since we've been together. I hope that everyone had a good Christmas and is having a great break from school.

Our next youth event won't be next week - Bible Study next Tuesday night at 7:00 pm at my house (169 Lake St.). Fairview youth members are welcome to join us since you're Monday night Bible study isn't going to be happening anymore. We've been going through the book of Luke, so if you've got time then read through the first 4 chapters of Luke to get caught up to where we are.

Then next Friday (January 8th) we'll be having an ugly Christmas sweater party. We'll start at 6:30 that night because we'll be having supper together potluck style (that means everyone has to bring something).

Stay tuned for more details, but start looking through your closet (or your mom, dad, or grandparents closet) for a Christmas sweater.

Christmas Babysitting

Scott St. youth members remember that we're meeting at the church tomorrow at 3:30 and we'll be having our choir practice from 3:30-5:30 and then getting pizza. Bring $3 to cover supper. Also remember that this Sunday after church is the run through of the Christmas Eve program so plan on staying for lunch and then attending that practice.

For youth tomorrow we're going to be blessing the young families in our churches by doing some Christmas babysitting...don't worry, I don't even like small children and yet I think this is a fun youth event. There are going to be different activities that we'll be doing with them and it's going to be a packed evening. Although it will be a great event, keep in mind that it will be about us babysitting and entertaining the kids, not us entertaining ourselves, so if you come then be ready to help and play with children.

We'll be meeting at the church at 6:00pm (that's an hour earlier than we normally meet). AND BE ON TIME. I don't want to scramble around to explain things to you once the kids arrive...we need to be ready for them when they come.

Where's Waldo?

First off, we'll be having our youth choir practice tomorrow at 5:30. If you are a part of the Scott St. portion of our youth group then this means you should be at the church tomorrow at 5:30. Please be on time.

If you are not a part of the choir then meet us at the church at 7:00 pm. We will be heading to the Pen Centre from there. No, we will not be shopping. Christmas is hanging in the balance and we have some culprits to find in order to save Christmas! Hm...that either sounds exhilarating and exiting or lame, but trust me it'll be fun!

Extra Youth Choir Practice

Christmas Eve is coming quickly and the youth choir definitely needs some more practice...AND MORE PEOPLE! So, I'm calling out to all SSMBY members and asking you to come out to our practices. You're going to be at the Christmas Eve program anyhow and you'll look pretty silly sitting in the audience while we're up there singing, so you may as well join us.

We're going to start meeting on Tuesday nights at 7:00 pm at Scott St. instead of Bible study. So, come to the church tonight, not to my house.

Games Night with Seniors

This post is going to be packed with information so please read all of it...even if it's long.

First off today is going to be our first youth choir practice for the Christmas Eve program...actually last week was the first one, but no one showed up :(. Come to the church at 5:30 pm and either bring $3 to chip in for pizza or eat supper at home before coming.

For youth tonight, we've invited the seniors from both Scott St. and Fairview to join us for a games night. Last year was loads of fun and I'm sure this year will be great too! You need to be at the church by 7:00 (no later!) so if you can't make it to choir practice then come to the church at 7:00.

Next Sunday is our Youth Christmas Banquet and today is the deadline for the early bird ticket price, so bring $10 along...seriously, you do not want to miss this banquet!

Also, next week we're going to an Ice Dogs game and I absolutely need to know who is coming so I know how many tickets to buy. The tickets cost $14 and I'm only buying tickets for the people who tell me they are coming, so if you haven't talked to me by Monday then you are not coming.

GOOD NEWS!!!

The youth choir is reuniting and the first practice will be tomorrow at Scott St. at 5:30 pm. Emily will be there as our director extraordinaire so please be on time. The goal is to have two songs ready for the Christmas Eve program at Scott St. It's going to be a blast and everyone is welcome to join, but if you are from Fairview then please make sure to ask your parents if this is okay. I don't want our Christmas Eve program to compete with something at your church...although perhaps we can do a preformance at Fairview as well. Also, if you're interested in pooling money to buy a pizza for supper then please bring $3.

Whether you're interested in the choir or not (and I hope that you are) regular youth will be starting at 7:00 pm at Scott St. and we'll be playing Gargon so be prepared to be scared!!! Also, make sure that you are wearing proper footwear...there will be a lot of running and turning tight corners and I don't want anyone slipping and falling down the stairs or something because they were wearing bad shoes...no joke, it's happened!

Bill Cosby & Ice Cream

Tomorrow night is Bill Cosby night!!! Last week, my mind was blown when I found out that some of you don't even know who Bill Cosby is...seriously, Fat Albert, The Cosby Show, Jello Pudding Pops...if you have no idea what I'm talking about , then you, my friend, are in for a treat...that won't strike out with mom (Click on the title to watch Bill Cosby in action).

We'll be meeting at the church at 7:00 and don't eat dessert before coming because we'll have ice cream.

Festival of Art

This weekend is Scott St. Church's art festival. It's an entire weekend devoted to worshiping God through a celebration of the arts. Friday night we'll be joining the rest of the church for the coffee house and art open house. We'll be meeting at the church at 7:00 pm. After we've sufficiently perused the art exhibit we'll be heading to Suzanne's parents' house to hang out for the rest of the night.

It's been a pretty small group that has been coming out recently and the group hasn't been very consistent, so whether you usually come out or not, come give it a shot. We've been going through the book of Luke in order to get a better understand of Jesus and what his life means for our lives today. See you tonight!

Hayride

This week is our annual hayride! What the heck…is it seriously the end of October already!?! I guess so.

We’ll be joining Cornerstone, Grantham, Orchard Park and Vineland for a time of worship singing, a speaker and then the hayride!

Fall Lounge Night

Tonight is our Fall lounge night...a.k.a. pumkin carving!! It's hard to believe that it's already time to do that, eh. We're meeting at the church at 7:00 pm, so be there! I unfortunately will not be there because I'll be hanging out with the junior youth tonight...seriously, it feels like forever since I've seen some of you, but have fun!

Stuff for this week and next

Are you ready to tap into your creative side and try your hand at screen writing, directing, and acting? I sure hope so, because this Friday you're in for a night of ridiculous fun and it's going to be AWESOME!!! You'll be meeting at the church at the regular time...7:00 pm and you may notice that some familiar faces are missing - the adult and student leaders will be up at Camp Crossroads for the annual Youth Leadership Retreat, but our very own Jordan Duerrstein and Tim Goertzen will be back to lead you in a night of movie-making fun!

SUNDAY SCHOOL is canceled for this Sunday...and by that I just mean that I won't actually be there, since I'll still be at Camp. However, if you're going to be at the church during that time anyhow then feel free to go into the kitchen and help yourself to breakfast. I'm pretty sure that you all know where the breakfast stuff is...cereal in the youth cupboard, milk in the fridge, etc. Just make sure to clean up after yourselves.

BIBLE STUDY NEXT WEEK will be at 2A Water St instead of at my house and Mark will be leading it, so meet him at his house at 7:00 pm next Tuesday to see what happens next in the Gospel of Luke.

13th Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner

This Friday is SSMBY's 13th annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner. Thanksgiving weekend is typically a time for people to spend with their friends and family, but the reality is that not everyone has friends and family, so this is a night that we spend serving our community by providing food for the hungry and a place of belonging for those who may not have it elsewhere. Last year we cooked and served Thanksgiving dinner for over 130 people! That's pretty huge and it takes all of us chipping in to make it work. This is no regular youth night, so come to the church at 3:30.

It's going to be a lot of work...for goodness sake, we're cooking and serving a huge dinner for over 100 people...but since we'll be doing it together, it's sure to be a blast!

Please be on time and be ready to help. Wear dark pants (preferably black) and light tops (preferably white) because we will need most of you to help serve the food. Let me know if you've got any questions.

SSMBY Games Night

I don't know about you, but I kind of like to think of SSMBY as a sort of family and what's a family without a games night? Tomorrow night we're going to be having a SSMBY games night, but not just any games night, all the games are going to be giant-sized!

We'll be meeting at the church at 7:00 pm...well, I won't actually be there because I'll be at the junior youth kick-off, but you'll be meeting at the church at 7:00 pm.

SSMBY Records

Tonight (Friday) you have the opportunity to become a part of a very prestigious group...the SSMBY Record holders. This opportunity only comes once a year, so make sure you plan on coming and start practicing. There will be judges and stop-watches and we're counting on you making your way into the SSMBY Book of Records.

We will be providing the supplies for classics like sunflower seed spitting, chubby bunny, card throwing, and SPAM eating, but if you've got something else in mind then please remember to bring your own supplies.

Bible Study

We're re-starting Bible study tonight and I want to invite all of you to come out (that includes all of you in grades 9 and 10). Last year it was mostly the older students coming on Tuesday nights, but Bible study is in fact for everyone, so whether you've ever come before or not, know that you are invited and welcome to join us.

I'm not sure about you, but I know that for myself, growing up in the church and hearing the stories of Jesus since I was a small child in Sunday school, although good, has sort of made me disillusioned to the reality of who Chirst is and the message that he came to bring. I was reading through the gospels this summer and was amazed at how many times I'd come to a familiar story, and after reading it and reflecting on it, would come away amazed and having learned something new about God, or myself, or the what it means to live my life for him, etc. So, we're going to start this year off by looking at the life of Jesus and some of our misconceptions of who he is and what it means for us to be in relationship with him.

Student Leader Initiation

Man, I am so late in writing this. If by chance any of you check this before coming to youth tonight I'm happy to inform you that student leader initiation is back by popular demand. That's right, tonight you are going to be introduced to your new SSMBY student leaders for 2009/2010. We'll be testing their intellect in a trivia challenge where wrong answers will require various tasks to be completed. We will be amazed, disgusted, and delighted by them.

NO BIBLE STUDY

I'm not sure how many of you read the bulletin and noticed that it said we'd be having youth Bible study tonight, but the bulletin was wrong. Youth Bible study will be starting up next week. Please do not come to my house tonight, but definitely plan on coming next week.

Outdoor Coffee House

The end of the summer is near and as sort of a celebration of this past year and a transition into the coming year we're going to be having an outdoor coffee house with the young adults. It'll be fun and relaxing for all, but I want to make a special invitation to those of you who graduated high school last year and are moving on to university or the life of full-time work. You're obviously still invited to come to youth this year (and we hope that you do), but the reality is that you're growing up, so this is sort of a night where your old family (SSMBY) is saying goodbye and your new family (young adults) is welcoming you in.

We'll be meeting at the church at 7:00 and then heading to N.O.T.L., to my parents' house. There will be live musical entertainment (Tim Durksen will be playing), great snacks and coffee, and some outdoor lawn games. Please be on time tomorrow because we're hoping to be at my parents' by 7:30, so that means we'll have to leave shortly after 7:00. If you know you'll be late then please arrange to be dropped off at my parents' house...I can give you directions if you need them.

Also, this week has been surprisingly chilly, especially in the evenings, so be prepared and wear warm clothes. Seriously, if you don't trust me then just step outside once its dark tonight, its pretty cold out there and the night will be a lot more enjoyable if you aren't shivering and cold all night.

Treasure Hunt

Tomorrow night is going to be our first ever SSMBY treasure hunt. Now, I know that you guys don't like change or trying new things, but trust me, this is going to be fun. It'll be packed with adventure and you'll have to use your wit, your charm and your brawn in order find the treasure.

Ice Cream @ Port

We're going to be going to Port Dalhousie for ice cream this Friday...nice and relaxed after an AMAZING retreat. So, we'll be meeting at the church at 7:00 (the usual) and then heading out. Please bring some money along if you want to get ice cream. Hmm...it might also be a good idea to bring some bug spray. I don't think the bugs have been that bad this year, but I'm having flashbacks of last year and being eaten alive, so it's probably best to be prepared.

Lawn Games & Outdoor Movie!!!

I hope you're planning on coming to youth tomorrow night because it's going to be AWESOME!!! We'll start out playing a few classic lawn games (bocce ball, croquet, etc.) while we wait for the sun to set and then we'll lie back and enjoy a movie that brings us back to the simpler times of childhood fun and adventure. Seriously, you do not want to miss this! However, to make sure that you have a truly enjoyable evening PLEASE BRING WARM CLOTHES AND BLANKETS!!! Even if it's hot out during the day and you are absolutely sure that you won't get cold, just indulge me by bringing really warm clothes and at least one blanket along...trust me, it gets cold out once the sun goes down...bug spray might also be helpful.

We'll be meeting at the church at 7:00 pm and then heading to my parents' house, so let me know if you're going to be late and I can give you directions. Also, if you know that you need to be home early then arrange for your parents to pick you up from my parents' house (I can give you directions if you need them).

So, just to make sure you get it...
You need to bring:
* warm clothes (pants, hoodie, socks and shoes) for when the sun goes down
* a warm blanket to cover up with (we definitely didn't have enough last year, so everyone bring one just to make sure)
* a lawn chair (if you have one, if not then hopefully we'll have enough blankets to lay down on and cover ourselves with)
* YOUR SUMMER RETREAT FORM!!! Tomorrow is the deadline for them

Last BS of the Summer

It's the first Tuesday of the month again...man, time is going to so quickly...however, instead of having girl/guy bible study we're going to be having regular Bible study at my house tonight...and this is going to be the last Bible study of the summer! WHAT!?!? I know it's a shocker! It's been a while since we've had regular Bible study, but if you think way back, you'll remember that we've been going through the book of Ephesians and we'll be finishing up with it tonight.

So, I'll see you tonight at 7:00 pm at my house.

This Week

This is going to be a super quick update to remind you guys that I'm going to be up at Camp Crossroads next week, so we won't be having Bible study this week.

On Friday Mark will be taking you guys hiking. You'll be meeting at the church at 7:00 pm and then heading out from there. Please make sure that you wear shoes...flop-flops will not be convenient foot wear.

School Yard Games

Wow, we've had a lot of rain this summer. Well, rain or shine we're going to be playing school yard games tomorrow...either at Lincoln Centenial or in the church gym. So, come to the church at 7:00 pm and get ready to be brought back to your childhood. If you've got some favourites that you used to play as a child then feel free to make a suggestion...and if anyone has any skipping ropes please bring them along.
